Das Konzil scheitert jedoch, der abgesetzte Bischof Athanasius der Große kommt nach Rom, wo er auf einer Synode als regulärer Bischof anerkannt wird. Auf dem Konzil von Sofia erklären daraufhin 76 oströmische Bischöfe Athanasius und Bischof Julius I. von Rom für abgesetzt.
